NCEES®   FE   Reference Handbook   v10.6.

A short, plain-English guide to the only resource you may use during the FE exam — and why version alignment matters.

In short

The NCEES® FE Reference Handbook is the only reference document permitted during your FE exam. The current edition is v10.5, in effect until 30 June 2026. Version 10.6 enters into effect on 1 July 2026. FP Institute aligns each book edition to the version in effect at the time of printing.

What is the NCEES® Reference Handbook?

The NCEES® FE Reference Handbook is the official document, published by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES®), that contains every formula, table, and reference an examinee may consult during the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.

It is provided to candidates as a searchable PDF on the computer-based testing (CBT) screen. No other materials — books, notes, or print-outs — are permitted in the exam room.

Why Handbook version matters

NCEES® periodically updates the Handbook. The current edition v10.5 is in effect until 30 June 2026; v10.6 enters into effect from 1 July 2026. Earlier editions (v10.0.1) had different page numbering, formula sets, and reorganized sections.

Prep materials written for older Handbook editions reference page numbers and section names that no longer match what you'll see on the exam. This is a frequent and avoidable source of friction during practice and the test itself.

How FP Institute aligns to the Handbook

Our books are written and revised against the Handbook version in effect at the time of printing. The current FE Mechanical edition (2026/2027) is built around v10.5; a v10.6 update is in preparation for 1 July 2026. Every formula citation, every page reference, and every problem mapping points to where the exam reference actually places that information.

This is the foundation of our pedagogical approach, which we call the Handbook-First Method. The principle is simple: if the exam gives you the Handbook, practice on the Handbook.

Where to find the official Handbook

The Handbook is published and distributed exclusively by NCEES®. You can access the current version through your NCEES® candidate account at ncees.org.

FP Institute does not distribute the Handbook. We provide educational material that teaches you to navigate it efficiently.

Common questions about Handbook versions

If I prepared with an older Handbook version, can I still take the exam?

Yes. You will be given the current v10.6 on exam day regardless of which version you studied with. The risk is that your memorized page references will be wrong, costing you time.

How often does NCEES® update the Handbook?

Historically every few years. NCEES® publishes minor updates between major releases. For up-to-date information, check the NCEES® website.

Is the v10.6 Handbook free?

NCEES® provides the Handbook free to registered candidates through their account. Print copies are also available for purchase through the NCEES® store.
